About Harvest Gwinnett
A program of Live Healthy Gwinnett, Harvest Gwinnett was launched in 2019 to connect community members through hands-on environmental education, plant fresh produce to improve resident food access, and nurture engagement opportunities leading to improved health outcomes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, community gardens act as health promoters. They decrease mental and physical stress levels in adults while enhancing mobility, socialization, and community impact. As a response to Gwinnett's growing need for access to fresh foods, Harvest Gwinnett works alongside community partners to close the meal gap by implementing community gardens, nutrition education, food distributions, and more.
In partnership with Gwinnett Parks and Recreation, Live Healthy Gwinnett maintains and operates Harvest Gwinnett Community Gardens in Dacula, Lawrenceville, Snellville, Sugar Hill, Lilburn, Suwanee, Loganville, Norcross, and Grayson. Each garden has leasable 4’x8’ plots that residents can apply to rent and maintain on an annual basis. To fight food insecurity, community share-rows at each garden are planted, maintained, and harvested with all produce being donated locally to residents in partnership with health and human services, cooperative ministries, housing authorities, and more. Our friends with UGA Extension Gwinnett will soon be offering an array of programs for all ages and abilities from Gardening 101 to Pest Management; check back for a listing of activities. Food Forest
In partnership with Gwinnett Parks and Recreation, we planted more than 12,000 food bearing plants and pollinators across 19 parks - roughly 20 acres! Lookout for signage designating the future food forest areas and watch us grow!
With a shortage of pollinators across the nation, this project supports the ecological betterment for all, especially the productivity of both public and private gardens across Gwinnett. Visits from bees and other pollinators also result in larger, more flavorful fruits and higher crop yields which supports the delivery of nutrient-dense meal components to residents facing food insecurity. Through the development of these sites, we have integrated a diverse assemblage of pollinating species that provide important feeding and nesting grounds for over 100 species of animals.
Did you know Live Healthy Gwinnett received an Urban Agriculture Grant from Food Well Alliance to support the Lawrenceville Community Garden? Check out our Lawrenceville Community Food Forum held on March 21, 2019 that kicked off garden initiatives happening here in Gwinnett and Metro Atlanta!
